Home Essentials, Frederick MD

If you’re lucky enough to be in Frederick, Maryland sometime soon, be sure to stop by Home Essentials of Frederick at 38 E. Patrick Street. Historic Frederick, located less than an hour from Washington, DC, Antietam, Gettysburg and Baltimore, is a great place to spend a weekend, and Home Essentials is a great place to spend an hour or two shopping.

Owners (and sisters) Michele Patton and Lisa Henry had always dreamed of opening a gift store together, “. . .but we thought it was just that. . .a dream. Then fate intervened and the real opportunity presented itself.” Michelle move to Frederick and they opened the store together in May 2008 in downtown historic Frederick. Their combined retail backgrounds helped the two ride out the marginal economy in 2008 and 2009 and now that things are turning around, they’re loving where they’re at!

Great Display Idea - The Best Way to Sell Language Art

When asked how they found Language Art, Michelle says, “A friend, who owns a store in Massachusetts, recommended Language Art to us during one of our late nights in Atlanta in January 2010….we were sharing vendors we liked and wine, of course! We’ve been carrying the line since February of 2010.”

The best thing about the line? “It allows the person buying it to put their personal “stamp” on the word…..it individualizes the art…whether gift or personal purchase.” Michelle says the four-letter words sell best – words like GOLF, DANCE, LOVE, HOME, WINE. These are all words that immediately convey a statement, and that also make great gifts. The 2 X 3 tiles with trays have also been a great seller recently. And there’s always the perfect personalized wedding gift – people love to choose a last name to give to the bride and groom.

Home Essentials has an entire section devoted to Language Art, with some words on the wall and some on easels. The 2 X 3 tiles are right below the wall mounted section. And then on occasion they sprinkle a few words in specific sections of the store – “The Lake and Beach are in our seashore section on our store…Garden is in our Garden section…”

Michelle says customers find the line great fun. “They’re intrigued by the wall of words/art that we have up…so it gives us an opportunity to explain the program and connect with our clients.”

Then she laughs and tells the story of the Home Essentials customer who had two teenage boys who shared the bathroom in the basement ….which she was tired of cleaning on a frequent basis…so in an effort to get her point across, she bought the word AIM and put it above the toilet!

Michelle and Lisa had some great praise for Language Art – “We think you do a fantastic job……customer service is amazing, reliability is terrific, little/no breakage, and everyone is great to work with!!”

And for retailers in general “Product choices are absolutely key…but customer service differentiates your store and insures your clients come back time and time again!”
