Language Art and Pick Up Sticks – A Great Collaboration

Several years ago, we had the privilege of having a booth right next door to Pick Up Sticks Jewelry at the Beckman’s show in Chicago.  One of the best things about market (besides meeting all our retailers, of course) is that we get to meet such amazing vendors – artists and jewelers and craftspeople – who make their living creating and selling their products.

Pick Up Sticks was no exception.  We were immediate friends with Glena and Sabrina, and while Dilynn shopped their boards of photos charms and trinkets, one of them was in our booth ordering personalized wall art for gifts.  In fact, they were the vendors who talked us into trying the Atlanta Gift Mart, which really helped business take off like gangbusters.

And during those long hours visiting across the aisle, the idea of collaborating took hold.  We had images, they had image-based jewelry.  It was really a natural, and the Artistry Charm line was born.  What could be better than our photographed black-and-white alphabet in Pick Up Sticks two-sided pewter framed charms?  We love these charms, and evidently so do customers!

If you’re reading this in mid-July, we’re back in Atlanta at the AmericasMart for market, with an entirely new line of products (about which we’ll be blogging soon).  And we’re selling Artistry Charms (find them here).  And when we’re not talking to retailers, we’re probably standing in the aisle visiting with the Pick Up Sticks girls.  Over the years we’ve become good friends and we can’t wait to catch up.

If you’re in Atlanta this week, or in Chicago in a couple of weeks, stop by and say hello.  We’ll even show you how to find the Pick Up Sticks booth!

Language Art’s Favorite Retailer for May – Wood’n Ya Wanit

Amanda and Harry Litsey of Wood’n Ya Wanit came into the Language Art booth in Atlanta a couple of years ago and immediately fell in love with our product. Which was nice for us, because we knew instantly that they were great fun and would be fabulous retailers for Language Art. They had a special request – they needed their first order in a hurry because of a music event coming up at the Tan-Tar-A Resort where they have one of their stores.

Amanda and Harry Litsey - some of the funnest retailers we know!

So, although we were on our way to Chicago show, we pulled out all the stops, got our staff at home on the order, and the order made it in time for the event. Good thing for Language Art – Wood’n Ya Wanit became our number 3 retailer that year. And they were our number 2 retailer last year. These folks know how to sell Language Art!

When we picked them for our Favorite Retailer for May, we got online and took a look at Osage Beach, Missouri. Just wanted to have an idea where they’re selling us, that sort of thing. And let me tell you, these are lucky folks – check out the resort website at www.tan-tar-a.com and the lake website at www.funlake.com. They get to live and work on the Lake of the Ozarks every day – we’re very envious.

Because they’re in the heart of America, Amanda and Harry Litsey are pretty particular about selling items made in America. Amanda says she’s following the series on “Made In America” by Diane Sawyer of ABC World News, and she continues to be committed to providing American Made products. They carry 170 to 180 American artists in their two stores, which makes Language Art a perfect choice. One store is in the Tan-Tar-A Resort/Convention Center and another in their lake resort community just five miles down the road.

And Amanda’s suggestion for marketing Language Art? When customers are looking at the words, one of the salespeople lets them know what other words are in the store, and gives them info on the Expressions line. With the words and Expressions displayed right behind the cash register, customers can’t resist buying one or two words. “They create an impact,” Amanda says, and goes on to say that Wood’n'Ya Wanit happily ships items home for vacationing buyers.

Lake of the Ozarks - and a great excuse to drop by Wood'N Ya Wanit. . .

Amanda and Harry bought the resort Wood’nYa Wanit store in 1990. At the time it was a store that carried primarily wood products, but under their watch grew to include glass, metal and clay 11 years ago. Selling unique items that you can’t always find elsewhere, this is a retailer who’s figured out how to merchandise great products. In a beautiful setting. We’ve borrowed this photo below from www.rentozarks.com just so you can see exactly how beautiful. Like we said, we’re envious. And dying to visit sometime soon.

If you visit before us, tell Amanda and Harry hello. We’re extremely pleased to be one of their American Made products!

Language Art Expressions – Perfect for Mom!

The second Sunday in May – the day when we’re all asked to stop for a moment and pay homage to the women who not only kissed our scrapes and soothed our fears, but who cheered us on at the finish line, cried at our weddings and graduations, took a thousand prom photos, studied algebra with us (bewildered but determined), endured our teenage attitudes. . . Mothers truly do it all, from making breakfast to darning socks and creating Halloween costumes out of cardboard boxes.

Mildred B. Vermont said “Being a full-time mother is one of the highest salaried jobs in my field, since the payment is pure love.” Ambrose Bierce said a sweater is a garment worn by a child when its mother is feeling chilly. Abraham Lincoln said “All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel Mother.”

At Language Art, we want to celebrate Mom with just a word or two, your choice. We’ve captured images here of our color Expressions line creating the word “mom”, as well as some others. You get to choose the letters you use – if you want “Mother” or “love” or even her name, feel free. You know your mother best, just as she knows you best.

Language Art’s Favorite Retailer for March – Arts & Artisans

When you’re an artist trying to promote a new line of wall art, going to trade shows can be intimidating at first.  It’s more than a little daunting to pack up your precious wares, tote them to your first show, set up a booth and then wait on what you hope will be a loyal customer or two.

At Language Art we were lucky.  Our very first major trade show, in Chicago in July 2007, brought Arts & Artisans into our booth.  We already knew about their stores (who in the Chicago area doesn’t?) and we were thrilled when they placed an order.

Dilynn and Greg with Amanda of Arts & Artisans at a "Meet the Artist" event

Since then, we’ve been honored to be one of  more than 450 artisans featured in their retail spaces, and we’re proud to name Arts & Artisans as Language Art’s favorite retailer for March 2011.

Home Essentials, Frederick MD

If you’re lucky enough to be in Frederick, Maryland sometime soon, be sure to stop by Home Essentials of Frederick at 38 E. Patrick Street. Historic Frederick, located less than an hour from Washington, DC, Antietam, Gettysburg and Baltimore, is a great place to spend a weekend, and Home Essentials is a great place to spend an hour or two shopping.

Owners (and sisters) Michele Patton and Lisa Henry had always dreamed of opening a gift store together, “. . .but we thought it was just that. . .a dream. Then fate intervened and the real opportunity presented itself.” Michelle move to Frederick and they opened the store together in May 2008 in downtown historic Frederick. Their combined retail backgrounds helped the two ride out the marginal economy in 2008 and 2009 and now that things are turning around, they’re loving where they’re at!

Great Display Idea - The Best Way to Sell Language Art

When asked how they found Language Art, Michelle says, “A friend, who owns a store in Massachusetts, recommended Language Art to us during one of our late nights in Atlanta in January 2010….we were sharing vendors we liked and wine, of course! We’ve been carrying the line since February of 2010.”

The best thing about the line? “It allows the person buying it to put their personal “stamp” on the word…..it individualizes the art…whether gift or personal purchase.” Michelle says the four-letter words sell best – words like GOLF, DANCE, LOVE, HOME, WINE. These are all words that immediately convey a statement, and that also make great gifts. The 2 X 3 tiles with trays have also been a great seller recently. And there’s always the perfect personalized wedding gift – people love to choose a last name to give to the bride and groom.

Home Essentials has an entire section devoted to Language Art, with some words on the wall and some on easels. The 2 X 3 tiles are right below the wall mounted section. And then on occasion they sprinkle a few words in specific sections of the store – “The Lake and Beach are in our seashore section on our store…Garden is in our Garden section…”

Michelle says customers find the line great fun. “They’re intrigued by the wall of words/art that we have up…so it gives us an opportunity to explain the program and connect with our clients.”

Then she laughs and tells the story of the Home Essentials customer who had two teenage boys who shared the bathroom in the basement ….which she was tired of cleaning on a frequent basis…so in an effort to get her point across, she bought the word AIM and put it above the toilet!

Michelle and Lisa had some great praise for Language Art – “We think you do a fantastic job……customer service is amazing, reliability is terrific, little/no breakage, and everyone is great to work with!!”

And for retailers in general “Product choices are absolutely key…but customer service differentiates your store and insures your clients come back time and time again!”

Find Home Essentials of Frederick at http://homeessentialsfrederick.com/ or contact them at 301-696-9070.  And be sure to congratulate them on being Language Art’s Favorite Retailer for February!

Who We Are and Where We Started

Greg and Dilynn

For those of you who know Greg and Dilynn, you have to know that Language Art IS the two of them. It’s attractive, it’s expressive, it’s art that takes everyday objects and turns them into something beautiful and unexpected. It’s art that makes your house more of a home.

And like Greg and Dilynn, it’s subtle and then surprising. People who first see Language Art immediately have an AHA! moment when they realize they’re seeing words formed from photos of elements found in nature and architecture.

If you know Greg and Dilynn, you also have to know that they’re not the least bit interested in tooting their own horn or hearing themselves talked about in any way. One of the nicest things about the two of them is their tendency to deflect any high praise or flowery prose. Lucky for me, they let me write this blog so that I can give you all that, despite their protests.

I’m pretty sure Dilynn will read this post and say, “no, no, no – don’t take up any time talking about us!” But we all know that knowing Greg and Dilynn is essential to knowing how special Language Art, their company, is.

They’re both small town kids – grew up in Middlebury, Indiana, (population 2,956) where they still live. They knew each other in high school – in fact, Greg dated and married Dilynn’s best friend. After her death from cancer at 27, Greg was left to raise two small daughters on his own.

When a man is stimulated enough to start coitus activities with his partner but feel inability to keep hard erections during an intercourse. Checking pH of the saliva and urine with litmus paper at home women viagra online frankkrauseautomotive.com may possibly to show acidic state of bile and pancreatic juice.
Dilynn similarly was raising her two boys alone after her marriage ended. Amazingly (or not so amazingly if you have Greg and Dilynn’s faith), nine years after his wife died, Greg and Dilynn married in 1995, combining their two little households to create one very loving, fun and BUSY home with Casey at 9, Trevor at 10, Andrea at 11 and Amber at 13. When I asked Dilynn what things were like in the beginning, here’s what she told me:

“We were busy! We spent the first 10 years of our marriage going to many sports events, school stuff, and just raising a family. I have always been a stay at home mom~doing crafts, being room mother, and following my children around like the paparazzi, photographing all of their events. I even did a “photo of the day” journal for 5 years (2000-2005).

“Our Children are now grown and Amber and Jason have blessed us with 2 grandchildren. Amber teaches special education at our local junior high school. They still live in Middlebury. Andrea is the production manager for Harpo radio in New York City, Trevor is a CPA for a company nearby, and Casey is in his 2nd year of Law School @ IU Bloomington.”

So there you have it. Language Art is a business grown out of a love of family, photography, and the desire of Greg and Dilynn to build something that used their artistic talent, Greg’s engineering background, and their dedication to comfort and home. Now that you know a little more about Greg and Dilynn, want to know how the business got started? Stay tuned for our next post – I’m just getting warmed up!
